Shinano IJN Aircraft Carrier 1/450 Hasegawa

The loss of three main carriers during the Marianas campaign in June 1944 forced the Imperial Japanese Navy to re-visit the construction of Vessel No. 110, which had been put aside in favor or repairing existing vessels. Christened the Shinano and entering the IJN registry as an aircraft carrier, the ship was rapidly completed using simplified construction and minimal fittings. Working against a stated completion date goal of October 15, the IJN hastily assembled personnel and resources for the project, and while the Shinano was launched ahead of schedule on October 5, an error in flooding procedures for the launch resulted in damage to the ship’s hull when it crashed into the drydock wall, causing a nearly one-month delay while necessary repairs were completed. Basic construction on the Shinano was finally completed on November 19. On November 29, shortly after leaving its homeport for the first time, the still-unfinished Shinano was torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine Archerfish before ever having a chance to be used in combat.
